what is the difference between these three and what exactly are they? are they the processor? i am new to all this lingo. is a pentium better than an athlon?

You could use some of this information:

CPU 101

Athlon is AMD's main processor line, its the AMD 64 single core line, and the AMD X2 dual core line.

Sempron is AMD's lower quality, lower speeds, and lower priced processors

Celeron is Intel's equivilant to the Sempron, kind of.

Pentium's are generally better for multitasking, Athlons are better for gaming. AMD Athlon X2 are better at both.

just "Athlon" wont get you to know much about the processer, There is Athlon(first) Athlon XP(second) then Athlon 64 then Athlon X2 and FX, going from first to last.

There's the athlon line, then the athlon xp, then the athlon 64 (socket 745), athlon 64 (socket 939), athlon 64 X2, athlon 64 FX, athlon 64 (socket am2), athlon 64 X2 (socket am2)

Then there's the sempron (socket A), sempron 64 (socket 754), sempron 64 (socket am2)

There's a whole bunch of Celerons, but the newest is Celeron D i believe.

There's also a whole bunch of pentiums (I, II, III, IV, D) and some EE extreme stuff i don't know about.

do u mean if amd is better than intel?

if so..then he** yea

No, that's very incorrect. Conroe, Pentium D 805, Core Duo? All great examples of Intel steamrolling AMD in different markets (D 805 - Overclocking, Conroe - Next gen desktop, Core Duo - Laptop). I love AMD, I have an Athlon64. That doesn't mean that Intel sucks. They both (at some point) make a better product than the other.

I find when it comes to AMD and Intel, its normally which one is the newest product is ussaly better, Say intel just makes a product that beats AMD, then in several months AMD will just release a new CPU that beats Intel, and so on.

Heya, well basically speaking, the Semprons are not worse quality. The main difference is that they are not clocked as high and do not have a large cache and therefore perform a bit worse than their Athlon64 brothers.

Just to repeat what has been said from my viewpoint, this is how I would classify the current AMD line.

Sempron - budget, good performance
Athlon64 - mid-budget, better performance
Athlon X2/FX - high-budget, high performance

(I ignore Opterons for this comparison)

Now, as of now, the X2 line, aside from a few competing Pentium processors, is about the best you will get. With the new socket AM2, new X2/FX models have approached. As of now, it could be generally said that the top line of AMD processors have the crown. However, new processors from Intel are supposed to break that and introduce even higher performance.

JAN :D

i never really understood the budget processors.
if i were to buy a new celeron/sempron, why shouldn't i just buy an older or slower p4 or athlon64?

if you got an AMD, i think it would be better to buy a similarly priced Athlon 64 than a Sempron. same with intel, you would be better off to buy a smilarly priced Penitum than a Celeron.
