Would I be able to use an Athlon XP with a 333 mhz fsb in a mobo that only supports a fsb of 266 mhz? What problems, if any, would this cause? Could I somehow compensate for this difference in the bios?

If this is not possible, could I use one of the faster mobile Athlon XP's that DOES have a fsb of 266 mhz in a desktop motherboard without any issues?

Yes to both questions. In the first case, the HTT will just be slower. You could OC it

Do I have to point out what is wrong with this statement? Bobo is sort of right, except where he's wrong :P, the CPU will run at a slower core speed.

Well,overall, yes. But that would be because the HTT is slower. So I was right:P. The HTT would be slower, I just never said anything about core speed. (mebbe because I forgot that the speed it mult x HTT:rolleyes::D )
 
Ok, how about I ask you what AMD CPUs sport the Hypertransport system? It's not anything based on the K7 :)

Oh yeah, this is an XP that we're talking about....I saw the title and thought it was any AMD CPU:o
 
I'm trying to find the most cost effective way to squeeze a couple more years out of an emachine with an AM37 socket A motherboard and an Athlon XP 2400+ with a 266 fsb. This is used for homework and such, but is also used quite a bit for gaming. It's starting to choke on some of the games that are played on it.

What happens if I use an Athlon-MP 2800+ in my single socket A motherboard ? It has the 266 fsb I'm looking for, but a faster core speed, which should speed things up a bit? That is if it's compatible.

From what I've read, there isn't a whole lot of difference between the Athlon-XP and the Athlon-MP except that AMD modded the XP so it could no longer be used in single socket mobos. Is that right?

Of the three choices, which would be the better replacement for an Athlon XP 2400+ with a 266fsb:

1. Getting a faster Athlon XP with a 333 fsb.
2. Getting a faster mobile Athlon XP with a 266 fsb.
3. Getting a faster Athlon MP with a 266 fsb.

Edited to say: I forgot to mention that I am running 512 mb of PC2100 ram. Would upping the ram to 1 gb help?

upgrading the amount of RAM you have wont hurt. One of the faster prcessors with a 266 BUS would be the best match as a faster 333 BUS would be slowed down by 66MHz per multiplier increment

Where did HTT come from AthlonXPs have FSB not HTT
