I'm experimenting with overclocking my CPU. Right now I have it set at 230 and it's running at 42 degrees Celsius. How far do you think I can go?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Socket 939
Stock cooling fan from CompUSA

p.s. I've checked the temps with Everest and SmartGuardian - they are both the same

So your FSB is 230?

I think so.

It's whatever I have to change in the BIOS to bring it up. I'll double check and repost though.

EDIT: Actually, it's the CPU frequency I've been changing. It was originally 200 but I moved it up to 230, so the CPU is showiung up as 2.30 Ghz. Is that actually overclocking it or do I have to change the voltage somehow?

That's overclocking. ;) Don't up the voltage till you are unable to raise the Ht any more, and consider lowering memory speed with a divider if you're taking it higher. Memory/cpu freq will not be 1:1, but a faster clock speed is by far the better advantage.

As to how far i can go, depends on a couple factors, not least the chip itself. My X2 3800 can hit 280x10, but not much farther stable. Finally run the newest version or Prime95, it's able to tax both cores at once.

The AMD 3800+ has a stock speed of 2.4 GHz. The 200 that you are referring to is presumably the FSB.

Thanks guys. I actually found another thread on another site that had nice results on a stable 2.7 Ghz, so I'm gonna keep experimenting and testing.

Well here's an update:

I was stupid and didn't follow the "Slowly Overclock" rule. My computer didn't post, so I went back down to 2.3 ghz. Windows booted, but I had a stability issue. I rebooted and set my CPU back to factory defaults. I rebooted and logged into XP, getting a "Registry has been restored from a backup copy" then windows rebooted. Had the same issue every time. Tried repairing the registry with the recovery console. Needless to sya, I screwed up and now my good copy of windows is dead. I installed XP on my slave and will just back up what I can and then re-install from scratch.

Damn :(
