Athlon XP or 64bit

I have about $600.00 to spend on an upgrade. I want to get a :
-Case
-Power Supply
-Motherboard
-Processor
-Memory
-Graphics card
I will be using my existing drives for now. Do I get the best Athlon XP or go for the 64 bit chip? If you have ideas on any or all of the list please let me know? Also, if I do get the 64bit chip, do I also have to get a new 64bit operating system? I don't do much gaming (a little, but not like Doom or anything) but I do a lot of video editing and encoding. Thanks...Greg

600 is a little cheap for all that if you want to go with the 64 bit....
you'd have to go low end with the rest of the parts...

save up some more cash man and get your moneys worth.

well
AMD 64 3200+ $200.00
1 gig pc 3200 DDR 400 $140.00
430 watt PSU $80.00

you got $200.00 left bro you can get a ok card for $200.00 better come up with more for the rest.
or shop online and might get it all for $600.00 like Ebay and overstock.

On that budget i'd say your only option is XP unless you find some really nice deals or get very low end parts. A64 will be pretty hard to do with $600.

You can get a nice XP system with $600 and if you are into overclocking then you get much more than your moneys worth.

Mboile chip - $100 (or cheaper depending on which model you pick)
Mobo - $85 (Abit, Asus,Epox, Gigabyte...few other good ones)
512MB PC3200 DC kit - $100-$175 i would imagine, really depends on what brand and all that.
Case - $20-$60 (get one that comes with a PSU if you want to save money)
Video Card - $50-$200 (you decide what you need and what you can take advantage of)

Thats ~$620 IF you end up buying $175 RAM, $200vid card, $100 CPU, $60 case. You can cut back in one area and get sumthin better in another if you want. And with all the deals out there im sure you can find all what you need for under $600 if you go XP line.

Dunno about that....

CPU -- Athlon64-2800 ($120USD)
Mobo -- Chaintech SK8T800 (65USD)
RAM -- PQI/KingMax 512MB PC3200 (60USD)
Video -- Jaton 6800 (270USD)
Power -- Silverstone 400W (50USD)
Case -- Whatever you can find (35USD)
Net: 600USD

thats a socket 754 setup on a via chipset yes? i didn't mention it but i don't even consider socket 754 setups when i think of A64. It's a possibility, but because they are outperformed by a 939 and AMD has already discontinued them i don't think it's a good route to go if you want future upgrades. You probably won't agree, but this is my prefrence/opinion so it don't matter! lol.

1. AMD has NOT discontinued them I dont know where you heard/read that but whoever it is, you need to go straighten tem out ;)

2. Socket754s are a budget solution -- which is what wre' working with there. I specd a S939 box for $500 in a different thread but that didnt have the rest of the requirements (i.e., video card, case, power)

3. S754s will easily match and in some cases outdo S939 setups when overclocked... granted this is on a NF3 platform but again we are on a budget -- getting a 6800 at the cost of the k8T800 chipset as opposed to a 9800Pro with the nF3, i felt, was a better choice

I heard that this fall AMD is planning to drop the 754 chips and mobo's. I can't get an actual AMD quote of this...i dunno where i would find one. But i read it on a few different forums and in some reviews they say a negative aspect of the mobo is "soon to be discontinued by AMD, upgrading in the future might be hard." I'll try to find a direct source...

Also since the 3700+ is the last 754 CPU to be released, it kind of makes you wonder why. There coming out for new and improved 939 CPU's...but have no plans for 754's. Maybe they won't be discontinued, but once you have a 3700+...that's as good as it gets.

Ok, I might be able to do the 64, but is it worth it. If I overclock an XP and put more money into a vid card, mem. and case will I be better off? If I get the 64 I will have to skimp on everything else. I do little gaming, but the video editing is my concern. The setup I have now just about handles what I need to do and I can't even touch the mouse or it might crash.----Athlon XP 2400+, 512mb ram, Nvidia GeForce2 Ti 128mb, 250watt ps, VIA KM 266.

Upgrading will be hard but thats when they are discontinued (as opposed to 'soon')... there's no reason AMD would gut their more consumer popular Athlon64-754 and Sempron models. Perhaps you had the following
in mind
The processors work with a 200-MHz hyper transport channel, maximum heat loss is 89 watts and clock speeds range from 1.8 GHz to 2.4 GHz. Further increases in speed are not planned for this socket.
Granted they dont have anything planned but plans have changed in the past :)

In general it is a good idea to buy Socket939 where possible but budget constraints sometimes dont make that possible. Looking at AMD's roadmap, the Socket754-3700 has an 'end-of-line' of Q4 2005 which gives it some life still. Furthermore, some of tehe Socket754 Semprons are scheduled to live till Q1 2006 :)

No. [1] The A64-754s are handsdown better [2] the difference between the AthlonXPs and the Socket75 Athlon64s is that the AthlonXPs are already discontinued while the Athlon64s are scheduled to be discontinued :)

I think I'm gonna go with what u specd out, however is there an alternative to the $270.00 vid card maybe around $200.00 ?

You can get 9800Pros for 200ish, 6600GTs for 240ish and 6600s for maybe the 200 mark. Between the 9800Pro and the 6600 its pretty even i think ... id personally get the 9800 but the 6600 might be better dunno
