athlon xp or athlon 64??

Im going to be buying a new CPU and i was debating between the AMD Athlon XP 2800+(2.08Ghz) or the AMD Athlon 64 2800+ (1.8Ghz). The price is only $2 more for the 64bit, im not sure which one i should get. The Athlon XP is faster in terms of Ghz, but im not sure if the 64bit would run better. I've never used AMD's before so i dont know a lot about the types of CPU's they have. Which one should I get?

I'm also buying a new motherboard and RAM, so dont say that they use different sockets;).
 
I'd say go with the Athlon64. With the XP you will probably have heat problems without a big aftermarket heatsink and the Athlon64 is much more 'future ready' :)

Yea, I agree. I have an AMD Athlon XP, nothing really special in my opinion. You could overclock the AMD64 to faster speeds or leave it as is, and it would be better than the Athlon XP I think.
 
I would go with the athlon 64 2800+. I much rather have a socket 754 motherboard then a socket A motherboard. The sempron 3100+ is also around the exact same price of those two. I have a thread going on comparing the sempron 3100+ and athlon 64 2800. From what I read the sempron is a decent option.

Where I live the step up in price from Socket-A procs to S-754 is very small, so if decided on AMD then 754 or 939 is the way to go.
 
If you can get a socket 939 then your all set as amd's duel core is suppost to come in 939 pins.

If you're considering an AthlonXP, dual-core isnt a viable option
 
yeah i would take an AMD 64 bit 1.4 Ghz over an AMD XP 3200+, hands down, the FSB is integrated into the chip, so basically you have a FSB equal to your frequency of your CPU, thats bitchin! :D

1. Which Athlon64 runs 1.4Ghz
2. There is no FSB and even the FSB/HT analogy is slightly flawed ... the HT runs at 800MHz or 1GHz (1600/2000 effective) -- regardless of the CPU speed. The difference is that HT is full-duplex, FSB isnt

Granted but if you're talking about Opterons thats a fatally flawed comparison to start with based on:
1. Price considerations ... if one is considering a AthlonXP then Opteron is so far outside of the budget scope that its plain stupid
2. The "obvious" class differences which i really should have to mention

there is a FSB on the AMD 64 bits, its just integrated into the chip

So... If he does get a socket 939 (which I think he should) then he can get a duel core.

Potentially but then again:
1. If AthlonXP is in the picture Socket939 is generally outside of budget
2. Dual core is a wierd animal .... I suspect it will be socket939 however i dont think the current crop of chipsets will be optimal for it.
