Hi guys,

Got the card above and sometimes my display goes all funny ie shows vertical horizontal lines and dots (big dotes) and then it freezes on me and sometimes it restarts or if not windows shows an error message in system tray saying your driver has recovered from an error but since then i have updated the driver to the latest one, what else can i do apart from reinstalling windows, can any of you guys help me out

Cheers

Rob

It could be the card itself is going bad. Have you tried it in another machine to see if you get the same problem?

simple things first jason.

@OP: Check the temps and clean the dirt/dust out of it. Also make sure your fan is actually turning. This sounds like a temp issue.

If the above don't work, then start PrecisionX or Afterburner and set the fan speed to 50% and see if it still does it.

If that does not work, try a different card, or a different computer to see if that fixes it.

If that solves the issue, then replace the card. If the above fails and it does not have the issue on another computer, or another card has issues on your computer, then put your PSU on a multimeter (12V and check the amps too).

The card does overheat dramatically like I touch it with finger and it burns, the fan does spin, the gfx tuning software a go

If it is overheating then you have found your issue. Try blowing it out with compressed air and turning the fan speed up some. Report back when you have done both as to how it is running. There is a chance teh heat could have damaged the vRAM, but can't tell for sure until the main issue is fixed.

The fan definitely works and I then cleaned the fan and heat sink out, it was full of dust anyway put it back in pice slot with pice power cable and still the same result coming up with lines either side of monitor and below also it doesn't even boot up windows anymore just get to the blue screen and repeats the same process over and over again

right, ive put in an old ATI card and works perfect no problem with it atall, so i think its definatley the card so its about time i upgrade so what do you guys think i should go for, i was thinking not ATI anymore as they overheat and not nicely made as Nvidia, so i was thinking about the GeForce GTX 660 Ti?

The new cards from AMD are just fine. What price range are you looking at? What games are you playing? What resolution are you playing with?

1. Unless you bought a 100% reference card, AMD did not make the card or cooler, Asus did

2. The build quality of the GPU is the same between both Nvidia and AMD.

3. The ATI card you had overheated, not ever single ATI card does, yours either developed a fault, was part of the tiny number that already had one or you have not provided a good enough environment for the card to run in.

4. Following on from 3, AMD pile out millions of chips a year, 99.9% of which work perfectly. You are trying to tarnish an entire brand based on a single experience, and one based on a card which is now nearly 5 years old. It is like saying you as a person are completely useless at everything you do because you once made a single mistake, despite you making thousands of perfectly reasonable and sound decisions and actions every day

5. A 660Ti, whilst a good card, is a horrible choice because for around the same price you can get a 7950, which outperforms it at stock and if you choose to overclock it.

6. Have you considered that the power supply may be faulty? If you have just replaced the card with an older card which consumes less power, thus taking load off the potentially flakey PSU. Either try the 4850 in another system as well or swap out a known working power supply into your system, with the 4850 running in it. You may end up getting a new card and having similar problems because that too is running on a dying unit
