ATI Radeon HD 4870 suffering from premature deaths

The Radeon HD 4870 cards have only been available on retail shelves for a couple of days but already a handful of owners are complaining their card died prematurely.

A topic with complaints about 4870s biting the dust can be read at XtremeSystems Forums. Several guys report their card died within 48 hours, some of the problems were caused by a corrupt BIOS flash but in other cases it doesn't seem to be related to overclocking, overvolting or flashing the BIOS as one user points out he was running at stock and another unfortunate user reports he has four dead Radeon HD 4870 cards:
Got 4 dead here, as well.

To fuel the fire and speculation, both sets we have died in Crossfire mode. (may be a trend from the looks of it)
This happened to Radeon HD 4870 cards from various brands and because there haven't been any reports of dead Radeon HD 4850 cards it seems safe to assume this issue isn't related to the RV770 GPUs.

We're not sure what makes the 4870 cards die as there's insufficient data but at this point the GDDR5 memory is the main suspect although some users report it happened shortly after they put Radeon HD 4870 cards in CrossFire. If you have a dead Radeon HD 4870 please report about it in our comment section and tell us how it happened.

UPDATE: It turns out that most (if not all?) of the Radeon HD 4870 deaths can be attributed to a failed BIOS flash. The reason why this wasn't clear at first is because the problem only arises after a cold boot. If that's the case you can get a fix for your card at Techpowerup.

minor issue, probably due to rush manufacturing. but i really hope ati fixes it, not TOO many cards have even been sold, so its not a huge problem YET.

im really pulling for their cards, AMD needs the revenue and nvidia needs the grins wiped off their faces.

The update has been changed.

Why do you make it sound like the 4870's are just up an dying, and "suffering" from premature deaths?

If i read that correctly. The people are flashing wrong bios to their cards, and killing them by overclocking/overvolting.

What would you expect it to do?

Ati 4870 single with GPU is faster then Nvidia 9800 GX2.

ATI is awaken from looooong dream !!! Now, Nvidia is in trouble.

Did you read the first sentence of the article in that link you posted ? And did you look at the date ?

AMD works best with ATI !!!! It is a FACT !!!

No, it is not a fact

ATI works very well on Intel chipset. Not to mention that Intel motherboards nowadays support crossfire

Yes, i know.
But you can't explain why ?!

1. I have Ati on my MSI motherboard with intel, and i know is working fine.

2. AMD was buy ATI to survive on market in struggle with Intel.

3. AMD owns ATI (Ati work for AMD), becouse that ATI works best with AMD, his chipset fully support Ati cards.

Nvidia work for Intel.

Listen ALEKSA, Not talking Crossfire or SLI. A single ATI or Nvidia video card works just as well on a Intel-AMD or Nvidia chipset board, for that matter you can include SIS and VIA chipsets.

it is true ati cards work a bit better but not enough to want to spend £250 or $400 to switch form intel to amd

you just get a few more fps nothing big just overclock it if you really want the extra fps

stop fighting or i will say your names in caps then type somthing tryign to sound dead angry

dude, you have come here with your terrible spelling and stupid comments

Please get your facts straight before you come here

Pfft Nvidia works for intel....!!!!

Please dude stop

I need to ask something though

can i ask, what exactly is flashing the BIOS?

Read another thread. Disagree now.

If that is true, why is my HD3850 performing perfectly on an Intel based chipset (P31, ICH7)?

Why is your personal experience an accurate indicator of compatibility on a whole? Also, define "perfectly". Do you mean that in a literal sense, i.e. it couldn't possibly perform better? I find that hard to believe. Do you mean that in a practical sense, i.e. it works without issues? If so, how is this an argument against AMD and ATI being more compatible than Intel and ATI? Just because Intel and ATI will work together doesn't mean AMD and ATI can't work together better. Discuss.
