ATX 20 pin versus ATX 24 pin

Can I use a 20 pin in a 24 pin for testing purpose. My 24 pin has a possible short in the green wire or it's the motherboard socket. I have a HEC 475D-T from an old Pent 4 machine but with a 20 pin atx. I am trying to test a

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard with a

PC Power and Cooling S75QB 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified

I have disconnected everything but CPU, hd4870 VC and memory G.SKILL PI Black 8GB (4x2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
I can take out the PSU from the puter I am using to write this which is

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire

Question can I use the 20 pin in the 24 socket without doing damage. I would prefer that than take this PSU out. Thanks for your HELP!!!!!
 
Well, the 24 pin actually gives the motherboard more power, but just for testing purposes, it should be ok.

You can test with the 475W power supply, connect the 20 pin to the 24 pin connector and plug in the 4 pin 12v to test mother board.

But I I believe I will go with ur advice. Your reason I wondering? Because it's HEC or just too risky overall? And I don't even know if I have the 4 pin 12volt to test the MB !!!! Why would they say it's OK? Gotta go check if it has one, but you know my gut tells me to go with the 24 on this puter. Don't really wanna blow up 2 puters $$$$$ Now to dismantle and test LOL thank you for ur responses I do appreciate it!! I just gotta RMA something my grandson needs his "baby" back :-)

Testing with a 20pin in general is fine...however the power supply itself is a very poor unit, HEC power supplies are low end and i would recommend against running a system off of one, even for testing purposes. Both that pc power and cooling 750W and corsair 650W are much better options to test with, even if it involves more work to test it.
 
Shuttin down now and using the corsair PSU! Thank you folks for the help. I'll let you know what it turns out to be. Gonna RMA something regardless:(

I used my Corsair PSU and did find my grandson's ATX cable end to be bad. One freakin green wire:mad: RMA PSU today. Thank all for the help!:D
