Auction Computers

I purchased some used desktops recently from a local county gov't auction site. The hard drives are wiped or in some case missing. In order for me to get these up and running for personal use again what is the cheapest route to installing operating systems on them? I'm retired and am just doing it for something to occupy myself. Also looking for most economical route to go. Thanks

Linux is of course free and would run well on older computers. Ubuntu is a popular distribution.

If you want Windows then you can sometimes find legit second hand copies of Windows on auction sites such as eBay but be careful and always read the seller feedback. If the PCs have keys for Windows on the COA then you can use those to activate Windows with.
