Audacity - Loss of Data

I was changing the pitch of an Audio track when the program stopped responding (I can't remember whether it quit itself or I had to). I tryed re-opening the Audacity file that had just crashed (which had a backup of itself) when a message box came up stating that the project data folder couldn't be found, or rather that said "Couldn't find project data folder: "crashed_file_data". It was quite right - I saw for myself that there was no data folder where there should have been.
The only explanation I can get near is the fact that I MIGHT have renamed the Audacity file soon before the incident, but I can't remember, if I did, whether I renamed the Audacity file whilest it was open.

Please could someone guide me as to why my project data folder has seemingly been perminently deleted by Audacity itself (it's not in the recycle bin)?

Thank you very much in advance.

P.S. I don't remember ever seing the project data folder for this Audacity file, and another of my Audacity file doesn't seem to have one.
