Audio Recording on a Desktop

hey guys i want to start using my older desktop to start home studio recording with and i have no clue as to what im going to need to upgrade it to make it be able to handle and process alot of audio through my recording software, can any help guide me along ?
 
i will be running cubase 5, with a usb 2.0 audio interface , i may have to even upgrade the usb card as well im not sure yet though

right now, i know the desktop has xp on it thats where id like to keep it, because i dont need all the extra that windows vista and seven has to offer i know the driver software that came with the interface is an ASIO driver the interface im using is a TASCAM US-800 .. and no i wont be using turn tables.. im on a budget to i really wanna thing i have a gb of ram in the comp now.. currently i use it with my dell inspiron 1525 laptop has a i have a dual core 1.8 ghz priocessor and 2 gbs of ram in it and its pretty up todate with windows 7 .. but with all my recording stuff hooke up to it im limited with the mobilty of my laptop someitmes its a hassel to unplug everythign from it when i need to take the laptop to a sound job or somehtign like that i want a dedicated comp just for recording with.
