audio & video through my tv.. wtf

shame on me for expecting this to be SIMPLE. all i want here is my pc hooked up to my tv, and have the sound come out of the tv's speakers.

so.. i've got the XP pc, with DVI output.. to an HDMI input on the tv. video works fine.

how do i get audio to work?? i've got an 1/8" jack in the soundcard, and RCA's in the tv. nothing. i diddle with the tv settings, nothing. i don't get it. everything i've read about this says it's that simple.... but OF COURSE it isn't

Are you using a DVI to HDMI converter?

Sound can be passed through the HDMI cable but if you are using a DVI port the sound won't pass. You will need to run a sound cable (like 3.5mm to 3.5mm) from your computer to your tv.

I would either do what salvage-this said (run 3.5mm cable) or if you have Optical out and your screen (which i guess) has optical in, better sound quality!!. But otherwise yeah DVI does not carry sound!
