ok i jsut installed vista on to my computer, i built my computer myself, and it says

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

has neone had this problem with Vista ???

That message could be seen with any version of Windows that runs one version of WMP or another since WIN 95 days. If you are able to hear sound outside of WMP the file itself may not be able to plsy due to the format it is in. Many drivers are finally now starting to come out for Vista in the finished not beta versions. Are you running onboard sound, a pci expansion card like a Creative Soun Blaster, or a usb type?

its an onboard sound chip by realtek, iono im trying to look for drivers for Vista, and it doesnt seem like notings working?

well it not only doesnt work on WMP but not on nething , its jsut the OS wont recognize it, like when i plug , its no play,

With onboad sounc one thing you will have to look into is whether that is enabled or disabled in the bios setup. Look over the bios section in the user manual to see just where the setting for this is. On most boards you will see an advanced or advanced chipset section once you are in there. You scroll ot that and open that up to see the vertical listings of all settings for the various board related items.

Scroll down until you see the sound or onboard item and press enter after hiighlighting that to see if it is set as on or enabled. Hopefully that's all it will turn out to be. That will prevent any sound since you are using the board's audio output directly and not a pci or usb type device. The worst would be a bad chip on the board if the correct drivers went on without problem.

Also, check Device Manager and see if there is anything listed there. If its just a driver problem, odds are you'd see a yellow exclamation point notifying you of a problem.

If that's the case, just go to you motherboard manufacturer's website and get drivers.

hey gret idea , never thought of gointo the bios, but uhm i tried going to the MSI enet site and i dld a driver and it keeps getting stuck and vista keeps say "do u want to proceed in downloading this driver " and i just cancel ir bc it always gets stuck :( , but ill try the bios first , thanks :)

ya noting still, the soun wont work , and i cant fit a pci sound card, my mobo is to small and my videocard takes up alot of space , bc of the big heat sink and fan... i dont know what to do :(

Did you run a Vista compatibility check on your system before you installed Vista???
If you have an older audio card it will not be compatible and Vista will not recognize it. That may be your problem.

ooo well i think saw it , my friend loaded vista for me , i got a 4.6 out of 6 and i guess everything is vista capable

The hardware are already Vista capable. The problems being seen with sound would be strictly driver related if no Vista version has been released at their support site. Creative even took some time before they removed the beta drivers they had available. The one thing left out of your sig is the make and model board in order to look over the support site for updates there. With the wrong version(XP probably) you won't get very far.

same probs here, but it told me that Microsoft Bus driver has to be loaded in the system first. So i did a couple of google found the Bus driver fix and installed my sound device.Mine also is an on-board realtek

For onboard sound problems Realtek seems to be getting the credit wherever you look. The AC'97 seems to be the grand prize winner! Even the better makes like Asus have been sssslowwww for seeing anything Vista related except for the newer version of the Asus temp probe seen lately. If you have an NVidia chipset on the board you can download the drivers for those on NVidia's own download pages.

ooo okais well ill try your guys solutions out, thanks a bunch , i emailed realtek tech support and i got a response from then in like 2 hours , and they said for me to give them the model number of the onboard sound chip(e.g. ALC883) soo i gave that to them and i hope to get somting tommorow. i tried dlding the AC97, does every chip support that driver ??? well imma try ur guys ideas, thanks PC eye and patrickv :)

Hope you see good results with a link from the tech support there. But whenever a new Windows comes out there's always a wait for something! You would think the other companies would get the drift there. har! har!

damn i knew i should of waited ............... its such a disspointment from vista. i still like it , but its just i cant load games, theres audio probs, and ahhh well im goin to fix it, thanks guys for all ur help :) very appreciated

For gaming you may want to start considering an expansion type sound sorce over taxing the onboard. Some of the largest power demands are from sound in games over just having a high end video card. The tax on onboard audio chips will often see problems.

That should be left on the disabled list for a gaming machine for backup consideration only in the even an installed card quits just for the basics. I ran into that on the last build here. At least the card manufacturers are starting to get Vista updates out faster then seen for the boards.
