automatic updates caught in continuous loop.

computer specs:
Compaq Presario CQ60-410
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 (32bit)
2GB DDR2 Ram
2.20 GHz Intel Celeron Processor

My laptop is having an unusual problem. when you start it up, it will load as far as the Vista boot screen (the glowing Windows logo) and then it goes to an automatic update screen that reads:

"configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3- 0%"

it stays there for a few seconds and then proceeds immediately to:

"configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3- 99%"

it then proceeds to shut down, and once it reboots, it goes straight back to the above. no matter how many times you let it proceed, it still won't go past this point.

it doesn't matter if you are in normal boot mode or safe mode. any ideas what is causing this?

See if that helps.

I have an HP of my own, and I know there is a recovery console boot option at the beginning of the boot process, I believe it's Delete? Or one of the F Keys. Try the restore in the recovery console.

thanks, that was exactly what I needed. I was looking for a way to launch startup repair, and for some reason I completely forgot about the recovery console when I was in that menu before... I believe it was a PEBKAC moment...

Lol glad I could help. Post back if it happens again.

well, after I restored to a few updates ago, I think I now realize the root problem...

I tried to install Visual Studio express again ( I had also done this before the last time it messed up) and after reboot, it went to a "Windows Vista product key invalid" message.

Apparently something in VS is messing up my windows install.

just to note, I am DEFINITELY using authentic products, since my Vista install was factory installed, and the VS version was installed directly from the Microsoft website. I tried reactivation by command prompt and slui4 command, but nothing is working. MS resource center says that it is a problem with a missing update, but we'll see...

Linux is looking nicer by the minute
