Greetings,

I have a Dell desktop computer running under Windows Vista Business 32, Service Pack 2. Now my C: drive is precariously running out of disk space - while I have loads of GB’s in my D: and external drives as follows:

Local Disk C:
Capacity - 59.9 GB
Free Space - 1.49 GB (does fluctuate down to MB level at times)

DataPart1 D:
Capacity - 395.0 GB
Free Space - 200.0 GB

Recovery E:
Capacity - 9.99 GB
Free Space - 5.12 GB

I also have an external hard drive O:
Capacity - 931.0 GB
Free Space - 582.0 GB

I’ve already done a Disk Cleanup on C: including the deletion of temp files and the Recycle Bin. Being only semi-computer literate – can I transfer certain files from C: drive to another HD thereby freeing up needed space?

I am interested in acquiring an Avanquest program called Partition Commander 11, which I believe, allows a redistribution of free disk space between hard drives, e.g. from D: to C:. I don’t know if it also works with external HDs. This might well be the simplest solution.

Just how good is this program? Are there any pros and cons, etc I should know about?

I would first Temporayily move all the Data on D to the external drive for safe keeping, then just use the Windows tool in Disk Management to expand the C Partition into the D Partition. After that is done you can move the Data from the External back as long as you left enough space on it.

If you still store the My Document Folders on C, you also might consider moving them to D, that may free up C Drive space so you don't have to do anything else. I only Keep Windows and Programs on C, and put all other personal Data elsewhere.

Paragraph 1 - I'm not familiar with Disk Management and merging partitions C and D and would have no onsite recourse if something went wrong.

Paragraph 2 - I checked my C: personal file holdings under Users \ Username \ Documents and found a mere 246 MB of space or 332 files in 62 folders. Just how much C: drive stuff can be transferred to D: to make a real difference in my case?

You have less chance of something going wrong using Windows Disk Management then 3rd party Partition tools.

If you move all the Data off D to the external Drive then the operation will have little chance of losing data.

My Windows Partitions never get too big, even a 7 Computer I have, only has a 30 gig Windows partition with about 12 gigs of empty space, so I can't account how you have a C partition so full with such little Data in the My Document Folders.

Paragraph 1 - OK, I'll check this out. All I want to do is take some GBs of space from D: and add it to C:. You saw my HD setup in my original post. Now, I have a Dell Vostro 420 desktop and I'm assuming I have only one physical HD, yes?

Paragraph 2 - Seems I have no need to back up anything manually as I subscribe to the Carbinite online backup service which backs up everything continually 24/7. Please do a Google for "Carbinite online backup."

Paragraph 3 - Re my running out of C: partition space. Now you have me wondering about it. Please recheck my original post for a breakdown of C: Is there a way to analyze my C: usage? Am I doing/missing something that may account for this problem? Ask away and I'll try to reply accordingly.
