Avast Problem

I've been using AVAST with no problems for a few months. Today I did a full scan of everything and it stopped when it got to C:/WINNT. I restarted and unplugged my external mybook and ran the scan again and it finished fine. I reconnected the my book and ran it, and again it stopped at C:/WINNT. My C drive is 60 gig with just the OS and programs, f drive is 250gig internal and mybook is 400 gig external. I only have about 30 gig on the 250 and 40 gig on the 400...any ideas why the scan might stop...the program still says its running and task manager lists it as normal also...windows xp, sp2 by the way.

The problem is a software glitch with Avast itself. Did you see any updates added lately before this started? If you ran an update without the 400gb drive plugged in it probably reconfigured itself. You will most likely either need to remove and reinstall Avast or go with another good one like AVG.

I usually keep the 400gig unplugged to protect from viruses or a power surge..anal I know, but I'm like that. If I have it unplugged, it still runs through the other hard drives fine. I only plug the external in to run back up programs to it as thats all I use it for, so technically I could just keep it unplugged except for back ups and that would be fine correct? so I don't have to re-install everything?

As long you know that nothing gets put there if you find that the host drive has a "bug" of some type at some point. You don't want infected files being backed up on a storage plugged or not plugged in to be infected later. If you have to wipe the host drive or upgrade Windows then you will want it plugged in there for proper detection. Other then that Windows should indicate a new drive/device added each time you plug it in.
