AVG performance question

Anyone familiar with the free version able to give me a no-holds barred rundown of performance? On par with or better than Avast? Random things that annoy you? I've been a huge fan of Avast Free for years, but the 2015 version is trying my patience with the un-blockable popups trying to get you to pay for the Pro edition.

It's a hog and has been a hog for several years now. Avast is better, but Comodo is even better.

I just switched from Avast Free to Bitdefender Free. Enjoying the decreased CPU usage but I'm not sure how good it is at blocking stuff..

Even the free version of Comodo Travis? I was looking at it earlier, but it doesn't seem to offer as much as the free Avast does.

Yes, the free one. I don't like that Avast has all these pop-ups these days.

I don't know about you guys but I don't get a lot of popups, they appear once a month when I log into my account...

For the 2015 version over here, the free protection package will periodically prompt you about other products and services Avast provides. There is a box to uncheck to stop receiving the notifications, but it's greyed out in the basic level - only available after you pay for an upper tier. You can change the time the popup is displayed to 0 seconds as a pseudo-workaround, but it still pushes random things that you have to close. It's one of the very shady things Avast has started doing within the last six months - the online shopping tool that it automatically installs and you actively have to search for how to remove is basically spyware. Ironic, given the sort of program Avast is.

I don't get that many popups either. And is that big of a deal? As far as I'm concerned, its a very good program right now. Just change the popup duration.

The pop-ups are an issue when you tell a non-computer person to install Avast and then they get all worried when they see the "Speed up your PC" pop-ups, etc.

Trust me, it blocks a lot and has a high detection rate as of this post. In fact, if a site is dishing out malware Bitdefender Free will display a block page. My uncle who is very computer illiterate had 19 viruses quarantined in Bitdefender Free. Good thing I installed it!

Only problem is it's not gamer safe if you use hacks and mods as Bitdefender messes with debugging. And to use system restore you have to uninstall Bitdefender. Kinda sucks, but it's a cloud based, no pop up crap stong anti-virus. I really don't need it since I use Sandboxie and NoScript. And I can just scan downloaded files with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware or VirusTotal.

Woow I've never seen those popups. I've been running Avast for quite a while now, I've seen the "upgrade to pro" ones but no such things as "speed up your pc" which is clearly adwares.

In fact, avast does too displays a warning page when a website is dishing out malwares.

Anyways they are both free, good, with a good virus detection. I recommend Avast because I'm very familiar with it but if people like Bitedefender it doesn't change a thing a this point.
