hi im new around here so bear with me. i recently purchased a new hd and windows xp pro 32bit with sp2. so im still in setup, technically, trying to get everything just right. so i dont have alot of programs installed besides antivirus and cleaning tools and some document files from my old hd.

now when i scan with avg it lists these 4 files: kernel32.dll, user32.dll, shell32.dll, ntoskrnl.exe - and where it would show the result it says "change" & under status it says "changed". is this normal or or is it telling me something is up?

It's simply reporting changes since first installing AVG and the time you ran the scan. Plus you have been copying files from another drive. AVG may flag a few of those too. This is part of it's active protection process.

Those files mentioned will change for example when Windows updates or desktop icons added or changed, or programs installed etc. It's completely normal but if it annoys you then exclude them in AVG

i see. so its normal for the most part.

when avg and spybot notify me of changes in windows, do i allow them most of the time, then? as long as they're not seen as a threat by antivirus etc?

Yes allow them, the heads up is to ask you if you trust them so common sense is needed as a virus etc can change a valid file or take the name of a valid file.
But those you mentioned are valid and will/can change.

Like I said earlier that's simply part of the active protection process. With Spyware Terminator it's almost as bad as the UAC now seen in Vista when going to install anything especially when reinstalling Windows a few times lately to run a few beta programs.

The ST program will flag anything where I simply wait until everything else is on to see that as one of the last items installed. For some that could get real annoying answering the prompts for every new change will seeing all of the updates going on!
