AVI to DVD questions

I have a whole series of a television show, it's about 25 episodes. Each episode is about 180mb and all the files are avi files. You can't get DVDs of this particular program and I promised a friend I'd burn it to DVD for them but didn't realise there'd be so many complications.

Firstly when I tried burning a one 180mb episode, as a test, it ended up being over a 1gb in size on the DVD and the sound was out of sync and it was in 2 parts, one part was a 1gb and the other part was the remainder. But it wasn't in order, it kind of took about 2 minutes from the middle and made it a seperate file and the sound was from the other part and it was all messed up.

Is this normal, should this happen?

Is it normal for 180mb avi files to be over 1gb when converted to DVD?

Basically what I'm asking is what is the best method for getting these 25 episodes on to DVD without it messing up? And how many episodes can I expect to fit on a 4.7gb DVD?

If you're still looking for answers, i just downloaded vso convertxtodvd and it works great. Only problem with the trial version is that you get a watermark pop up every 15 seconds for 15 seconds. But thats fixed with a fairly cheap product at £18 or about $30. Give the trial a go and see if you like it.
