I cant follow this tutorial, i am really confused by it, can anyone out there explain it. I got vlc player, is there a way to make vlc player work? Thanks for your support. If i could just learn this OS I would be really happy with it.

wow am surprise, if you can't follow this guide then if you go to ubuntu forums you wont be able to understand anything. seems you're rushing.

Go to your package manager do a search for :
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
  • gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

install them one by one, after that reboot your pc
edit : i forgot to add you need to search for "libdvdcss" in Synaptic, install those too

Thank you very much. Ya, this is embarrassing, I really am retarded when it comes to Ubuntu. I think I need to find a friend to demonstrate the general idea, then i can work from there.

found win 32, which has codec for avi, but couldnt find libdvdcss. Since i cant get vlc to work, can someone suggest another player, and everything with that player i need.

RhythmBox player, default with ubuntu, then there's Mplayer

no offence but you're not the kind of person to get around with linux cause you're always jumping up and down, why not google for once ? or go to ubuntu forums, they ave a massive documentation there

i entered those lines, and it looked like it was almost about to do something, then it says sudo, password for michael. My name is michael. What does that mean. It wont let me even type anything except enter, then after 3 tries it tells me i failed.

why use terminal ? this is a deb package just right-click on it and install.
you probably don't even know your own password you entered when setting up ubuntu.

The reason you don't see your password is because of security, you are typing it yes, but it won't show you what you're typing, so be sure not to make any mistakes (spelling etc) while typing

what type of avi file is this? I play avi files all the time just fine in VLC with no needed codec.

Are you trying to play some kind of weird DRM avi from like WMP or something?

thats because you are probably running on a Mac. :)
i recall such when running ubuntu, but Vlc is pretty lame on linux if you ask me, Mplayer is the way to go

I run VLC on windows, os x and linux, and I have never had that problem. It has to be some jacked up avi encoding is what I am guessing.
