Back light out

Well, I could have told you not to waste money on an inverter. If the backlight isn't working, either due to the light itself or due to the inverter you can still make out a faint image on the screen.

Since you've tried a new screen now, the only things it might be would be the cable that runs to the LCD or the motherboard.

Usually I would say no, because usually the problem would be the video chip. In this case, the problem seems to exist somewhere between the video chip and the LCD. Something going wrong on the motherboard between the video chip and the video out port would be rare, because there isn't much to go wrong, but it's not impossible. The video cable itself seems like a more likely culprit.

However, one thing. In either of these circumstances, I would think that the backlight would still be working. Just to double check, you have checked the BIOS and messed with the fn command that controls the video output to make sure that it's not simply set to output to external monitor only, right?

Please tell me more!

Please advise me on checking that. Since the new screen and inverter didn't help I put the old parts back on it.

I'll try anything as long as it doesn't cost any more. I'm already in the hole on this laptop.

Is there a post on the subject? I'm familiar with two monitors on a pc thru a double video card but laptops are new to me. This my first one to take apart.

With the old PC's, my first computer was a commodore 128, I came to late to get the 64 model. My second PC was the Tandy 1000, it was promoted as a "Mirror Image of the IBM. I refused to the IBM JR. and waited for better things

Show me the way to go..

Thanks

I did some research on the hp 9700 over the weeks and found a recall on that model where the left lcd screen hinge rubs the lcd cable until it breaks a wire. The recall ended 1 1/2 years ago.
My question is if the lcd cable is damaged the date would not be on the screen, but would the lcd screen lights still work because their cable comes from the inverter beside the right hinge?

On this hp laptop, Both data is blank and the lamps are dead....
