Back of hard drive has no connecters

In this picture you can see where the drive would normally plug in (that thing on the top right of the green PCB). Since a WD800 is also an older PATA drive it wouldn't connect even if you had the control board for it.

I'm also confident in saying that a Maxtor external drive would never ship with a WD drive inside :P

I wonder if someone took the 750GB drive out and then returned the external to frys. I don't think frys will help you though since you've had it for over a year and Maxtor/Seagate will likely assume you tampered with it since it's got a WD drive.

If you just want a working external, you can buy a SATA drive and put the enclosure back together.

Sigh... As far as I know, it was new. Mostly because it was such a headache to take it apart. Plus the outside stickers for the barcodes on the external itself wasn't tampered with. ie I ripped them OFF in order to take it apart. So I'm not sure what happened.
I think I'm going to take it to Fry's yet again, and see, since it's technically their fault for selling something like this.

Good luck with that. Cromewell is right. I doubt Fry's will do much more than apologize. You have had it for a year, and it was a clearance item when you got it. Since you have already taken it apart, you may have a hard time convincing them that you weren't the one that did the swap. It couldn't hurt to try though.
