Back up computer opinions???

Hello everyone. New to the forum and in need of some guidance.

I have recently just built a computer to replace my ageing Dell 8400. The dell is still great for what I can use it for, P4, (may want to get new motherboard/ram) have some basic Geforce 6000 series cards layign around for it, as well as the 6600, and 6800 that are in it.

The question I have with is all the data/pics etc.. on the Dell that I want to keep. I would like to do a fresh OS install on a fresh/new HD in the dell and take my old dell HD and place it in a case as a backup drive, and place for all pics and nonsense.

The reason for this is that the Dell is running poorly and hasn't had a fresh OS intall in so many years, from what I understand is that is the best way to get things back to good. Maybe I am incorrect.

Also new computer build is WIndows 7 and Dell is XP, may be able to find an old XP disc to exp with before buying another copy of 7, but that would depend on if I get another motherboard to support the 64bit for extra ram, and possibly overclock the 3.2Ghz P4 chip to speed things up. Dell has a 350W supply, adn 3gigs of DDR2 now (4 slots 2 gigs, and 2 512mb sticks).

Any opinions or ideas would be much appreciated.

Personally before i did anything else i would back up all my data onto some dvd`s say, then i would try and clean up the pc as best i could, then lastly i would do a reset back to factory settings and have it as new again
 
Well as of now I have just copied everything to the clean external drive that just has data/pics. The dell has 2drives, the main drive that it came with was corrupted I think and had a local store partition it I think since there is an Andy user and an Andrew user, if I remember correctly that is what was done. Any rec's on what I can do now that the data is backed up. I could just use the "newer" drive I put in later (300g) as the main drive?

Basically I would like to just maximize this computer to it's fullest extent. It seems to my rather "limited" skills with computers it could be a very capable machine to serve as a web/email/webinar computer to leave the newer comp for my trading. The new one I just built has a Thermaltake Armor+ i7 930, EVGA X58 4way sli, 6gig 1600/12800 ram, 4 vid cards for 8 mons. I like to keep this one dedicated to the charts, the other for a webinar that I use everyday, and email, web. The webinar can really tax it so I figure if I boost it up it will handle it all better.
