backing up OS and moving to new HDD

Did a little searching and didn't find an answer.

I currently run a seven year old Dell Dimension 2400 desktop computer with WinXP SP3 Home Edition. Specs for my system. I'm planning on upgrading the current 40GB HDD to a larger HDD. I'm considering a 320GB. Current HDD in the Dell is a Western Digital. I will be upgrading to another Western Digital HDD. To copy/transfer my entire OS and files, WD offers a free download on their site called Acronis True Image. I currently have a Western Digital 1TB external HDD that I've been using to back up my photos, music, etc.

What I'd like to know:

1. Can I use the WD software to back up my entire OS on the 1TB WD HDD in case my internal HDD would ever develop problems?

2. Has anyone ever used Western Digital's software to transfer their OS?

3. Is transferring the OS to another HDD really that simple, or are there things I need to watch out for?

I'll probably have more questions as I get more into this. All info is appreciated.

As long as you have no operating system issues and you still have the speed when you first installed windows, then its just a matter of using the acronis software to clone the old hard drive to the new hard drive. And then you could take the data off your external and put it on the bigger drive. The software is self explanatory.

Western Digitals, Data Lifeguard also works great.

I like Acronis too, but when putting in new Western Digital Drives to replace a Drive with a good copy of Windows Data Lifeguard is pretty intuitive and fast.
