Backing up programmes, reinstalling windows etc

One of my mates PCs has hit an all time low. Windows has gone completely mad and basically needs a fresh install.

He's got a lot of valuable data, software, games etc all installed on it so it needs backing up.

My idea was basically this:

Setup a homegroup and backup all his data onto on of my hard drives.

Do a fresh install of windows on his PC.

Then re-install all the data onto his PC from mine.

I've never done this before, so any tips etc would be really appreciated.

Cheers everyone!

You can back up his data (game saves, document, pics, music, and program database files, etc.) but you cannot backup the programs themselves. You need to reinstall them after you reinstall Windows.

you can back up the directories tho and if you reinstall the software to the same locations, you can just replace the files (if you have modified settings ot .dll's for example)

but what you are planning to do is fine to do.

In some cases its better because you only back-up what you really need, and get rid of all the extra crap filling up your PC resulting in a smoother operating system.
