I have windows xp and cannot get it to load. Is there anyway that I can backup my files without going on windows and reinstalling xp? Thanks for any info Gene

various way
1. Have you tried booting to safe mode
2. Have you tried a repair install of windows?
3. You can boot to linux from a cd (without installing it) and interact with you files through linux. A common livecd version for this task is Knoppix Linux Live-CD

Thanks

Thanks for the advice but it won't go into safe mode no matter what I try. I have a friend that has Linx so if he know how to do that I will try. I just thought there would be another way of backing up files if you can't get in to windows xp.

well you could just use a boot floopy disk and boot to DOS, but you wont really be able to move the files onto a blank cd/dvd via DOS.
I would say a live-CD linux distro is the solution, it will allow you access to the web, dvd burner, and other physical drives including most USB pen drives. But be aware its not easy to use and if you have a friend on hand that knows linux that would be very helpful

other options may be to remove the drive and pop it into another (maybe freinds machine) as a secondary hard drive, once you boot his machine you will be able to access your drive through My computer

Have you got another hard drive?

If so, Set the New hdd's Jumpers to MASTER
Current hdd's Jumpers to SLAVE

Install windows on the NEW hdd

Then just access the files you wish to get through windows now that you have booted off the New hdd.
