Backup Storage Option

Hello all, i am looking for an easy storage option for a network. Currently i have an external USB Hard drive connected to a network hub (linksys NSLU2) The transfer rate is WAY to slow for me. I have about 30gigs i need to back up once a week. Im looking at 2 options. A. create a dedacated backup computer with a second drive as my backup, (i have done this way for a little while not on a non dedicated computer because the USb is to slow) The speed im real satasfied with, takes a little under 3 hours. The other option im looking at instead of spending the 500 on a computer is to get a linksys EFG120 (the network storage) which connects direct eathernet to my network. However i have read ok reviews on this method.

I need some sugestions/opinions on both methods or another alternative im not thinking about?

thanks in advance

well if ur going to backup onto a separate hd, i would recommend u use serial ata (SATA) connection to the hd, which makes writing a whole lot faster.

Alright, so SATA it sounds like...i dont think ill do external, the new board i get ill make sure has SATA and use it as a dedicated backup computer. Opinions on SATA Drives? Iv always been a fan of Maxtor. Does the reliability i know of and hear about carry through with SATA connections?

Ok now since SATA is a little new to me, heard of it but never bnothered looking into it till now. Im noticing different kinds of SATA, SATA 30 gb/s
SATA2, and Serial ATA150. What are the differences? (BTW im looking between newegg and pricewatch)

SATA2 is just a faster version of SATA. SATA is 150 MB/sec transfer speed. SATA2 is 300 MB/sec. sata 150 is the same as sata, b/c same transfer rate. for the SATA 130 gb/s, this is for huuuge storage of tb of information. with this ur looking into high dollar equipment for thousands of dollars. i saw one system for approx 17000 dollars.

the board im looking at is
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe (says SATA 3Gb/s)

The HD im looking at is
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

am i doing good so far :D

Yea it does max out at that. For right now im thinking all i need is about 2 gigs..that might even be a little of an over kill. But i was thinking somewhere along the lines of 1-2 gigs

Is it possible to have a primary HD as IDE and have the secondary (Backup) as SATA? or is it better to have both as sata?

Both Sata, If you want to use your old IDE hd then you have to get a ide--->sata converter to plug it into the sata slot. (if you plug it into the ide slot it will lagg the system, and get VERY slow transers between the drives)
