Bad BIOS?

My family computer has been having random problems lately on bootup. Every now and then, it boots up in a completely different resolution, and is locked on the 4:3 ratio. It also resets the time back to sometime last year, and is unable to synchronize with the internet time. Could this just be fixed with a BIOS update? I forgot what this means, but on every boot there is a single beeping tone coming from the motherboard. Thanks for any suggestions

It's actually only been about one year. It's one of the Gateway prebuilt computers. Could it possibly be a hardware or software problem (I mean besides the battery). I did have to disable the onboard graphics to get the 8600GT to work, but I doubt that would have anything do to with this. Well that actually makes sense then haha, the only problem is it's not consistent. It only does it every now and then, but I suppose it could just be the battery going out. Would a dead battery really do that?

The time and whatnot make it sound so, when you put an 8600gt in it. Did you upgrade the psu?? The stock psu's are pretty underpowered..

if your loosing the time i would think so. for sure that would be the 1st and cheap way to go.

Hmm well, the PSU comes with two +12V rails at 18A, combined max total wattage of 285W on the two rails. The 8600GT only draws about 40W at max load though, I didn't take it to be a very power-hungry card so I didn't figure it needed an upgrade.

I would first start with changing the cmos battery. But the psu, if its a china brand like many oem's use, its probably more like half of what it says as far as power. I had a psu out of a gateway that was supposedly 500W, was using it as a bench power supply. Hooked it up to a car battery load tester just for fun,see how much it really had in it. around 160 watts load the thing popped... 350w on the 12v rails my foot...
