bad cpu maybe?

i have a friend that has an amd athlon 64 socket 939 cpu and a asus mainboard. he said that his mom was using the computer a while back and somehow or another she came to the conclusion that it was overheating and stuck a boxfan in front of it and continued to use the computer. later on they turned off the computer and it wouldn't do anything later on. i replaced his power supply (old one was verified as bad) and his heatsink and fan and added 4 more fans to the system. i may be wrong but i think they overheated the processor, killing it, and then took out the psu, maybe because of a higher voltage or amperage draw or something. as of now when you plug the cord into the new psu everything comes on with out hitting the button. all the fans and the LED on the board is green. but it won't eject the cd tray and im not sure if the hdd is spinning up. and it doesn't beep and there is nothing on the screen. cpu or is the whole thing bad? i have no was of checking a socket 939 anything.:gun:

It may be just the CPU or it could be the whole board... no real way to check unless you have both known good to swap with - you could call your local mom-and-pop computer shop and see if they would let you test the parts out on some of their equipment for cheap/free... only way I know to check for sure - I have the exact same issue with a computer sitting in the corner of my room - I dug about 1" of mold/dust from the heatsink, but it still won't power on - I know the PSU is good, b/c I've used it on other computers, and I've checked the RAM as well... w/ no real way to test the CPU or mobo, I decided to just scrap it for parts...
