Bad FPS for my specs? :S

On CS:S (Counter-Strike: Source) a pretty modern, graphical game runs on 1152x864 with max settings (low AA and billnear tho) on about 70fps max. 40 in heated battle or where i can see far out, 50 is probably the average. This isn't a terrible problem but i don't think i should be getting fps this low, my specs are in my sig.

I've tried the current rates:
cl_updaterate 60-100
cl_cmdrate 60-100
rate 20000-25000
fps_max 100-300

This makes barely any difference, also cl_updaterate keeps changing back to 60 on its own, which is pretty annoying..

anyone know why this might be happening?

your video card is not very great, correct me if im wrong but i think a 7600GT would be better, or somewhere in that range. if you have a problem, my best guess is video card

for a sure-fire way to test it, overclock your video card to its max operational (cool) speeds and see if there is any improvement. my guess is there will be

i got this off of newegg, is the memory speed shown in ddr? im pretty sure the core clock isnt, so buddy, i can overclock my AGP X800GTO to that core speed, and i can clock my memory to damn near 1200MHZ, and those FPS would be a godsend for me

Wow on nTune it says Core Bus is at 459 and Memory Bus at 400?!? Wtf.. that can't be right. It was supposed to be 450 and 800 retail.. I haven't messed with it in any way yet either..

I tried changing it to 800mhz memory bus like it says on the box. Wouldn't handle it, screen started going all blue and deformed. Locked up and mobo bleeped so had to restart, tried at 500, same problem.. Wtf is wrong with it?

Also, if the 8500GT is worse than the 7800GT thats just dumb in my eyes, i know its possible and looks quite likely, but no 8 series card should be worse than a 7 series, inless it has less RAM, then maybe.

the 400 it reports for memory is correct, you need to multiply that number by 2 in order to get whats on the box.

Oh darn.. so what it's currently putting out on CS:S (40fps in battle) is the max im gonna get out of it? :(

If anyone has any ideas of how i can improve rates without downing graphic settings or resolution i'd appreciate it.

Nope thats as far as youll get it without overclocking or beter drivers or reducing quality. Many of the 8 series are worse than the 7 series, only the 8800 out perform all the 7 series cards (not sure about the 7950 GX2 tho)

Don't go by nTune, it sucks and most of the time is inaccurate. Something like PC Wizard may tell you the clocks. Have you downloaded the latest drivers?

The only thing you can really do is download the latest drivers and make sure you don't have anything running in the background when you're playing CS:S... There isn't much more to do, sorry.

I have the same card. It's $70 USD in the store. I didn't need a fancy one because I only play BF2 and AvP2 and watch movies.

I have a lower FPS than you (in BF2), and a faster processor and the same ram.

Why did you get a budget card if you're gonna stress over that stuff?
