About 3 months ago I put together a pc and everything was working fine, until recently. Last night the PC shut down, black screen and without warning. Since then I've tried different power supplies, power cords, plugging into different outlets, different hard drives, removed the video card (using onboard graphics) and rotated out both memory cards (1 gig each, 2 total).
My current symptoms are that as I try to boot up vista it just shuts down abruptly. Even the light on the network port shuts off. I then cannot turn it back on. The only way I seem to be able to get power back to the board so I can try to boot up again, is to unplug the main power cord from the motherboard and plug it back in. When I do that the light for the network port comes back on, I hit the power switch and the process starts over.
Other observations: Last week I upgraded to an Artic Cool 64 cpu fan and noticed last night that it wasn't running full speed. In fact it was turning on and off and thus creating hardly a breeze. The fins were quite hot. I pulled that off and replaced it with the original cooler. I didn't notice any overheating effects on the CPU, but don't know if heat damage would cause any visible damage.
I don’t have another cpu to test or another motherboard to swap in. Seems like a Motherboard to me, but concerned about the cpu as well for the above reason.
System:
MSI K9NBPM2-FID motherboard
2 gig 800mhz Gskill ram
AMD x2 5200 chip
Corsair 750 watt psu
Seagate 320 gb hard drive
Thoughts appreciated. Should I bring it in for testing or just buy a new motherboard (probably cheaper than a diagnosis) and cross my fingers?? TIA.
