two maxtor hard drives disclosed the error message "bad signature" after being LL formatted in killdisk. Just what is a bad signature and how does it happen?

error message appears in killdisk. After the disk is cleaned I get the message "warning, sector 0 has bad signature" This happened to two HDs so i'm wondering if my power supply is over or under voltaging the hard drives. I sent one drive back for warranty replacement. If this is a problem that might effect the new drives i'd like to correct it before installation. just what is a bad signature and what causes it?
