We just had a rather severe thunderstorm go through. I thought we had shut down and unplugged the computers in plenty of time to avoid any kind of surge. Of course, the thunderstorm may have had nothing to do with the problem we are now having-- it could just be coincidence.
When my daughter tried to boot up the computer in the basement after the storm had passed through, the computer monitor (A SAMSUNG 17" flat screen) would not turn on i.e. the little green light in the bottom right hand corner of the monitor was dead.
I tried a different monitor (also a Samsung 17" flat screen, but a different model) and I could get the computer to post, then to start the Windows XP screen like it was loading, and then everything would go black and the monitor green light would start blinking. However, I could see the hard drive light continuing to indicate that the hard drive was still working and booting up. We just couldn't see anything on the screen.
Is it possible that a surge could have killed both the monitor and the video card?
The computer is one that I built. It has an Asus P4P800SE Motherboard with a 3.0 Pentium 800 fsb and 1 gig of 3200 memory. The video card is an Albatron FX Geforce 5700.
Any ideas appreciated.
