Baffled - "standard VGA setup?"

This sounds ridiculous at first, but its baffling a lot of us. We are just trying to set up my buddy's comp so he can play wow.

current config:

Celeron D 325 2533MHz on generic VIA board (p4m800)
512MB
Windows XP SP2

installed AGP8X Radeon 9600 SE

picture is up just fine. try to install drivers/catalyst from disc and from web, no go. it won't complete install. Gives error msg, "Please setup with standard VGA driver first before attempting install."

updated .net, second attemp, same answer. cleaned out drivers with drivercleaner, third attempt, same answer. set bios to run AGP instead of PCI, same answer. Booted in VGA mode, same answer. ran Everest, it recognizes the card and accelerator, but when you attempt to install drivers, auto or manual, it gives the standard VGA error. when you look in device manager, it doesnt recognize the card. everest does.

any suggestions?

Is there onboard video on that model? The specifications on that model seen at http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/p4-series/p4m800/ seem to point to it being there and you probably need to go into the bios and disable it. If that was being used previously for display and left enabled it will hamper any efforts to have Windows detect the non active AGP card. You already have the AGP/PCI set to AGP.
