Bandwidth Limit

Ok, i have 1.5 megabit verizon dsl and i'm trying to figure out how much bandwidth i can use before verizon will contact me and question the legality of my practices. Now the legal issues of my practices don't come in with pirating, thats not what i'm talking about. I have an FTP server running 24/7 and i allow my friends and family to connect in order to backup their data and what not. Now say they each have a couple gigs of data they want to back up, probably not a big deal because when they put it on technically they're uploading and i'm downloading. As far as i know ISP's track and are more pickey about how much you upload than how much you download. So say several of them want to pull some of their files off. I could potentially use quite a large amount of bandwidth uploading files. Here's where the legal issues come in, a friend of mine told me that because it's a residential connection they frown on people who have their own servers and what not. Now i've looked over their EULA and it pretty much says if you look at them wrong, smell funny, or act funny they can cancel you. I just am trying to get an idea of how much is too much. I'd like to keep them off my back, and yes i know they say the service is unlimited, but after a certain point i can gurantee they will claim you are abusing the service. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If they are advertising their service as "unlimited" then in theory thats what it should be, unless of course they have some "fair usage policy" or something similar. I think your best bet is to contact them, ask them if they enforce a fair usage policy.

Yeah, thats probably not a half bad idea... i know though that no ISP wants to be the one to have to say that they are imposing a limit, no matter how high it would make the average customer who would never come near the limit feel like their service was sub par because of it. If you really think about how an ISP works they can't handle everyone having their connection running at the max all at once, the only reason it works is because not everyone is using it at once. In theory they probably only have the capacity to handle a certain percentage of the total traffic they could potentially have at any given time.

You've made a very good point there. I think to be honest around 80% of users are casual users, and probably only get through a Gb or so every couple weeks. Its because of this ISP's know that they can offer unlimited broadband as the majority of people get through hardly any data a month, obviously there are the few that have bit tornado running 24/7 and 'rape' their bandwidth so to speak!

I have ATT unlimited so I dont know if verizon is the same but I can tell you I use at least 50 gigs down and maybe 20 gigs up each month for my servers, and the fact I have 5 pc's connected to one connection. I havnt been contacted (as far as I know) yet.

If they call you up just say "I give out free wifi at my cafe" they should leave you alone.

P.S. Your sig is too big, 10 lines max.

thats quite a bit of bandwidth, although i probably come closer to that than i'd like to admit, at least the down trafic anyway. BTW, i'm not sure but i think one of the few perks of being a VIP member is that i get a longer sig as well as more space for PM's. It is a bit long though, i should probably shorten it up.
