bang and spark from power supply!

Hello,

I recently moved house and plugged my computer in for the first time.

The computer was connected through a surge protected extension lead. When I turned the computer on, there was a bang and a spark from the power supply.

I've tried different extension leads and power leads and plugging the computer directly into the socket in the wall but I get the same problem each time.

I've tried other electrical devices in the same sockets and extension lead and they've worked fine.

It looks as if my power supply has gone and needs replacing, but I wanted to check whether there could be anything else which is causing me problems. I don't want to replace the power supply and run into further problems.

Thanks for your help,
Jon

Stick one end of a paper clip in the black pin of the 24 pin connector and the other end in a green pin and see if the PSU starts up correctly. If it doesn't, well then you know it's busted.

Check the back of the power supply and make sure its set to the correct voltage (110V if your in the USA).

[-0MEGA-] - the power supply has worked fine for me for over 3 years, so the voltage should be on the right setting, but I will check when I'm back home.

diduknowthat - err, is that safe?

Yeah, it's perfectly fine, I think it's only like 3.3v.

Also, if you get a new power supply, you might want to plug it in in that same outlet before you install it and do the paperclip thing, just to avoid frying your computer... but there is no guarantee that it's not already.
