barebones setup

Hello,

I am looking for opinions on a decent barebones setup to include processor and memory. Nothing fancy just a little light gaming and internet/chat time. My motherboard (ECS K7S5A Pro) was smoking yesterday and ruined my day. I have no idea what else is damaged. Thanks for the help :)

whats your budget? you can get a decent emachines for 450 with a monitor.

Thanks for the reply. I realize I can get an entire decent fully equipped machine for a very reasonable price. I would like to keep all the internal components that I currently have and just plug them into a new motherboard.

The motherboard I currently have is an "ECS K7S5A Pro" It looks to me like one of the SDRAM memory slots burned a bit and the machine would not boot up. I have a question.......This motherboard has 2 SDRAM and 2 DDR memory slots. I had 1 gig of SDRAM installed. Do you think if I installed DDR ram the board could function properly since those slots are not damaged at all????

Thanks

It is possible that it would work. I too have one of those boards and had it running a 1.3Ghz Duron. One of the DDR slots died on mine and eventually the whole board went. My suggestion is don't chance it, buy a new mobo and cpu (such as a S478 board and chip) and buy new ram and if necessary a new Gfx card. You'll be happier you did.

Can you give us the full specs of your computer? If you upgrade to a s478 your ddr memory will work fine....your hard drive will work (unless it isnt XP, alot of problems occur with under XP and new hardware)

S478 just means Socket 478, it's an older chip socket for intel's, the newest being S775. Yes you can use your old CD, HDD, and GFx card, however if you change the CPU and mobo you will most likely need to re-install Windows on the drive. Any manufacturer will work for you (I don't think you're doing any hardcore OC'ing or major gaming) so you don't need a super high performance board, just one that will stay stable.
