It also helps protect the components from pets, kids, or if a drink spills it will be harder for the liquids to get in. I believe it also helps with grounding.
As for the humidity, if it is very humid then it's much easier for moisture to condense on the components and cause a short.
A component can never be too cool!
(Unless it's been sitting in it's box outside, then you should wait for it to reach room temp before installing and using that component.)
