Basic LAN - How do you set it up?

I am pretty much a newbie at this, and I need some help setting up a LAN.
I have this situation: I have three computers, one tower in the Family Room, one older laptop in the living room, and one tower in my Workroom/Office, which is my main computer. The one in the Family Room is used mainly to use it with the TV (Record/Playback), but I use it also to go on the Internet. It runs Widows 7 Ultimate. The two others run XP, with the one in the Office the Professional version. All three are connected to a Server through a Cable Modem and a Router.
I like to connect the three computers to each other so that I can read files from either one of them, and use the printer which is connected to the computer in my Workroom/Office. Nothing is Wireless.
I understand that this is possible, but I have not found an article or instructions that tells me how to do it.
Any one can help me with this, or refer me to such an article?
Any comments are appreciated.

If all three computers on the same as router and are non-wireless (just strictly hooked up with a physical cable wire) then all three computers should be able to ping each other. To share files among the three computers, each computer needs to have a share folder and permissions have to be set to everyone. Same goes for the printer, share the print on the main computer and set permission to everyone. The computer with printer has to stay on at all times in case if anyone needs to print at any time of the day.

Take a look at this link. It should help you. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...mputers-running-different-versions-of-Windows

Just place all three computers on the same workgroup. On Windows 7 you'll have to enable the network discovery in the network and sharing center. Then just create the folders you want to share and edit the sharing properties for them to be accessed by all machines on the network.
