Battery problems with Acer Travelmate

A friend of mine has just given me an old Acer Travelmate 525. Unfortunely it has a quite important problem: it doesn't power on if it's not connected to the power supply (like if it wouldn't have the battery). If I disconnect the power when it's turned on it suddenly power off. So I don't know if the problem is the battery or if the problem is the connection between the battery and the notebook. The only thing I noticed is about the battery charge led: when I connect the notebook to the power supply it lights on (like if it was recharging) but after about 15 seconds it starts blinking. I searched everywhere to find out what this signal means (maybe it means that the battery does not function in the proper way) but I didn't find anything. Maybe some of you knows what it could mean. Please help me... I don't want to buy an expensive new battery to find out that it's useless.

Yes, I tried also disconnecting the battery and powering up without it. It powers up if connected to the power supply.
