I suggest you try Kaspersky free trial http://usa.kaspersky.com/trials/tri...ownloads/trial-versions.php&chapter=146481750 if you like it, you can buy it or download AVS which is also made by Kaspersky for AOL, works great without any of the AOL stuff.

Some other people will suggest AVG which is also free and good, but Kasperky got me rid of problems AVG couldn't, so I suggest AVS. There is also Avast which I do not personnally know.

Then, you could also get CCleaner and Spybot Search & Destroy.

Normally you should be able to catch a few things with those.

Here are my few suggestions:

1. First try doing some online virus scanning to help you detect whether you are infected.

Here are some sites:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
security.symantec.com
www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

2. After scanning, it may result that your computer is infected or not. If infected delete all infected files including the virus/spyware.

3. After scanning, try defragmenting your hard disk to organize the allocation of files in your hard disk.

4. Download Ccleaner(Free) and Tweaknow Regcleaner(Free) in order to fix registry problems that may be the cause or your slowdowns. You said that you've been doing a lot off downloading and I assumed that you have installed and uninstalled tons of apps, so cleaning the registry would help since the uninstallation process is always leaving unnecessary files.

5. And if you have come into conclusion that there is really no virus/spyware infecting your system you may want to do some registry editing to speed up your operating system.

If none of these helped you, you may want to back-up your files and reformat.:(

This should really have been posted in Computer Security, so it could well end up being moved by a section moderator.

I suggest you read this sticky from that section, it contains the standard recommended software to stop you from getting infected and curing an infection when one hits.
