Benefits of PCI-E 2.0?

I am in the process of upgrading my brothers computer, and we are doing it in increments, due to a slow flow of cash, but my main question is about the PCI-E slots. He's not going for super overpriced rig, so in just putting a Radeon 3870 in for the moment. His motherboard, at the moment, is a dual cure motherboard, but doesn't have PCI-E 2.0. I know he is going to have a bottleneck, but how much of a bottleneck? Will he be able to use the card to a certain extent.

You won't see much of a bottleneck, if any. There's only a few cards that are able to use the full bandwidth of PCI-e 1.0, so it's not a problem.
