Bent Prong

I received a 1090t processor with a couple bent prongs on the bottom. Is is possible to bend them back or will taking it back to the store be my only option?
 
I've bent pins back before, you just have to go slow and use something small enough to go between the rows of pins. Did it come like that? If its more than just a couple then I would take it back for a new one.
 
Yeah it came like that. I am going to take it back to Fry's tonight and if they for some odd reason won't replace it, I'll try bending the prongs back. It is one on the outside and one closer in the middle.

Fry's won't return it. They have a policy against damaged items, so now AMD is the only hope. If AMD doesn't replace it, I'm out $200...
 
You mean it came that way and they wont replace it? They trying to say you did it? CPUs suppost to have a 15 day return policy.
 
Take a mechanical pencil and use it to bend the pins back by inserting them where the lead would normally come out.

Exactly, but they won't take damaged goods back. ALWAYS OPEN YOUR EXPENSIVE HARDWARE AT FRY'S BEFORE YOU LEAVE! I hope AMD returns it, but I was hoping to build my pc this upcoming week since it is spring break. However, it may be postponed, so let's see what AMD does. I have a bent prong on the end and two sort of in the middle. I'm extremely frustrated right now!

If they are just off center (slightly bent). They are easy to straighten. If they are bent completely over, try AMD. They can break off if you try to straighten them if the are bent all the way over.
 
They are bent slightly, maybe 30 degrees. I think I should try AMD first, just in case I screw something up. Otherwise bending them back is my only hope that doesn't result in another $200 hit.
 
I would strongly suggest going there and making a scene and also if that doesn't work contact AMD,and also make a complaint about the Dealer.
Since its a new CPU you shouldn't have to do that.Its their duty to give you new goods in perfect condition and if they are not they should atleast be responsible enough to take it back for you.

Yeah I agree, we made a scene at Fry's and the supervisor still refused. They can't do anything it's store policy and there is no way to prove to them that it was defected before.
 
Just another thought. going to a dentist i always ask for the tools they are getting ready to discard. they are strong and thin. Stainless steel picks for cleaning. work well but i use them for making solder boards. Solder might track say SMT (surface mount) lots of uses for different kinds of tools like this.
just an idea also.
 
GOOD NEWS! With the help of my Dad shining a flashlight on the processor and trial and error with a mechanical 5mm pencil and a magnifying glass I was able to fix the bent prongs. So now let us hope that the processor will work once everything is into place!

P.S. I am extremely relieved right now. The entire day all I could think about was this processor. I came straight home from work and went straight to work on it. (BTW this was my third time I tried to fix it, thusly the third time is the charm)
 
Mate I'm glad you bent them back and I hope it works.

I just want to say that it is an outrage that the store wont take it back, in the uk there are trading standards to adhere and by not replacing it they would be braking the law they seem to be assuming you are guilty until proven innocent and, as we all know, it is the other way around.

If a company did this to me in the UK i would take it higher, maybe head office or trading standards (or whoever regulates trade where you are), I mean its not like frys would be out of pocket they would just return it to amd and prob get a replacement or a refund.

Idk how old you are but if you are still quite young it may have helped to bring your parents along, older generations always seem to get better results, I think businesses just trust them more.

I know you've fixed this already, but for future reference you might try to use a credit card, slide it along the row of pins, and the bend pin will get straightened with all its "brothers" so to speak. Done this a couple of times and it works perfectly.

Though I'm tempted to try the pencil trick, never heard of that before. Thanks!

I have never heard of the mechanical pencil technique to straighten bent processor pins. It sounds like a great idea.

I find that absolutely ridiculous that a vendor would refuse to own up to its mistakes. It looks like Fry's may be on my blacklist to buy computer components. I do not get why businesses do bad things to their customers. Bad news travels faster than good news.
 
Yeah innercx I'm eighteen. My father went with me and threatened to never shop at Fry's again etc. after the supervisor refused to replace/refund it. The supervisor just got angry back at us and refused to help. They assume I bent it or AMD bent it and either way it's not their fault. I understand this, but if this is the case, always inspect your hardware before you leave the store, and make them inspect it as well. Thanks for the good luck.

Kobaj, I never thought about aligning the prongs that way. I will have to remember that. Thanks.
 
I would have stood in front of the store with a sign that saids "this store sells defective parts" untill they replaced it or the cops came, one or the other lol. Glad you got the pins straightened out. I use a very very small pocket knife to straighten pins before.
