best card for 1280x1024

I have a dilemma between getting 9800gtx+ and gtx260. Will there be a big difference in fps at 1280x1024 ?

Well, the GTX 260 would give you better FPS, but I doubt you'd need one for that res. The 9800 should be more than enough for gaming at 1280 x 1024.

9600GT would do what you wan't untill the likes of RAGE/ I AM ALIVE/ Bioshock 2 come around.

Get the GTX260 core 216, the extra memory will help in games like GTAIV, and the better core will help with newer games coming out like Bioshock 2.
