Best computer for $500

Hey everyone,
My friend wants to build a computer, yet he only has a budget of $500. What would be the best build (part by part) for $500-550? The computer will be used for music, gaming, and typing up essays.

Thanks,

Something like this ( for the 550 budget, you could recut on some things like processor and leave it near 520$.

BTW if your friend had an old hdd and an old dvd reader or burner, it could save him a few bucks

For such a low budget, you may be better off getting a pre-built one and get more bang for your buck...here is an HP with an Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 @ 2GHz, 2GB ram, a 320GB hard drive, DVD burner, and Vista Home Premium for $499 ($549 with a $50 mail-in rebate) from compusa...

http://www.compusa.com/products/pro...WSE&N=200005+14&Ne=500000&product_code=346116

He wants it to game, thing that computer can't do and if he added a video card it would cost him more than just building it

yeah, sorry,,,forgot about the video card...so if he adds on the $87 geforce 7800gt you have listed, he'll end up about $587 but with a better processor and larger hard drive.

Thats a great idea in my opinion just take into account that his friend is in a $500 budget, and he may not be able to get the extra $50, remmeber he has to pay $550, and rebates take a hella long time most of the time...

Aye all of my rebates from hp have taken at least month and half

also, try looking at other sites for the parts
not ordering them all from new egg
sometimes there are huge savings to be made such as
the antec 900 on newegg is 120 and the exact same case on securemart.com is 75$

some sites to look at

tigerdirect.com
buy.com
clubit.com

nvm guys, i got my parts, and they r much better than this, and yes my dad let me use more than $500, and im getting a 22" lcd monitor

was this suppose to be a joke? cuz that power supply is CRAP but guess you don't really care, otherwise you wouldn't recommend crappy piece of shit components like the excelstor hdd or that lame power supply.

Was that supposed to be a joke? Cause that post seemed more like a threat than a innocent post. According to the reviews, it's great. I'm betting you'd diss off Seagate or Western Digital when they came out with THEIR first hard drives...

I'd suggest editing that post...

Great? i bet you don't even own anything from excelstor, more like you're suggesting it for being cheap more than owning one.

At least western and seagate didn't make their hdd in taiwan aka country of the cheap imitations

Yeah, I would totally suggest a one star 1TB hard drive! Great job! Just because it's cheap eh?

This one has fair feedback, with little death reviews...

And you know this is made from Taiwan because....

Let's say there is a Seagate company in the US and Taiwan/China... Hmm, better stop buying hmm?
