I am looking to upgrade from my old iphone 4s
I have been an iphone diehard, but I am finally thinking of making the switch to android.
The iphone 5s screen is not much of an improvement over the 4s, just a bit taller, an extra row of apps. I think they are losing market share by sticking to the one model release per year and not introducing a larger form factor.
ios7 is all over the place, 3 different keyboards, the lack of uniformity, at last they finally introduce call blocking, seriously, how could they ignore such an important feature for so long.
The phones I am considering as an alternative to the 5s are
Sony Xperia Z1, I really like this device from what I have seen, the screen looks amazing, better than the galaxy s4 in my opinion, I really really like the expandable micro sd card slot which you can change without opening up the phone externals. Also looks to have an awesome camera, iPhones have long held the title as one of the best phone cameras on the market and sony have provided some of the hardware that goes into them. Downside, is the TFT LCD display at certain viewing angles does not seem to hold up as well as a super AMOLED. Finally Sony seems to be back in the race with this phone.
Galaxy Note 3 I really like the stylus on this device, the text recognition is awesome and works so well, a far cry from the text recognition of days gone by.My main concern is that it is too big for day to day use.
Nexus 5 If it is based on the LG G2 which looks to have an awesome screen and awesome camera, this looks like it will be an awesome phone. It will be interesting to see if it gets the optical image stabilisation of the LG G2. And by far the biggest advantage being the ability to upgrade to the latest version of android straight away without having to wait. I think it is a device worth waiting for, hopefully they announce details on 14th october as has been rumoured.

If you were buying a new smartphone now, what would you buy?

I'd jump on a Galaxy S4 personally. I know it's not listed in your three picks, but may be worth a look at. Basically a smaller Note without the stylus.

I switched to android after owning (and, at the time, being happy with) an iPhone 3GS. Much prefer android for phones, though like IOS for a tablet. My spouse has the iPhone 4 and hates it after having an android..

I have a Galaxy Note 2 currently and really like it. If I hadn't gotten that, it would have also been the Galaxy S4. I had an early Sony Xperia and returned it about 3 years ago.

I've wanted an HTC One since I first heard about it. I love HTC and their build quality and design. I also really like the Sense GUI. But I'm also waiting for the Nexus 5. However I'm in a slight hurry to get a new phone as my Inspire 4G running ICS (originally shipped with Gingerbread - no official update from HTC) is slow and laggy these days.

Root that sucka! Drop Calkulin's E4GT ROM (Gingerbread-based) on it and it will fly.

I've had it rooted since I got it. Ran Android Revolution HD for the longest time, then found Blackout ICS. I've been running that. It's a nice fast ROM, but sometimes my keyboard will lag like almighty hell. I just need a new phone. My Inspire is 2 years old.

I can be a little biased with Galaxy Note 3 since I own one. But before I purchased that I was able to review the other smart phones listed and I may say that it has the best reviews too.
