I would recommend getting monitors (speakers) though. People don't get them just because they sound good but more because they have an overall flat frequency.
They will give you a better overall mix without you having to try your track on a few different stereos and finding out things are too loud or soft. krk, m-audio, and yamaha all make good monitors. Don't buy super cheap ones if you go this route save up 300 plus for them before you buy and go with some that have 8 inch speakers if you can afford it (It's nice to have low end with no sub).
I always went with internal (pci) sound cards but the newer firewire externals devices are pretty good. If you go internal check out m-audio or emu cards, external m-audio seems to be on top.
