Best External Hard Drive

I'm looking for an external hard drive to back up my photos and mp3s. I've searched other websites for reviews to find out which brand works best but never find any from intelligent, computer literate people. I have a Dell Latitude laptop that is about 4 years. I also want to get a USB 2.0 card because my Dell only has one 1.1 port. So really I want to get both and make sure they are compatible. I've read a lot about how people sometimes have the problem of the computer not recognising the card or the storage device. I need your help, you guys know more about this stuff than I would. Thanks so much.

I would definitely go with a seagate. I have two 320gb internal seagate hard drives and they're awesome. And plus, you cant beat their five year warranty.

And a 'Belkin' USB 2.0 card. Seagate, Western Digital, or Samsung for the hard drive. It's cheaper to buy hard drive and enclosure separately in my experience -- easy to fit them together.

I have had good luck with WD, Iomega, and Seagates inserted into Enclosures.
I'd have done what pip has recomended and found a 20-30 dollar enclosure an added in my own internal drive, which is usually cheaper to buy. Then you have a cheap external hd for about half the price. The only down side is some cheaper enclosures do not have fans or holes, so if you using the hd a lot then it might over heat. I have never had a problem with this when using the drives for storage.
