Best free antivirus software?

I just got done with my AVG trial, now I moved on to Avast. I like avast better because it has informed me more of whats going on under the hood in my system.

It's also better because it doesn't try to scan all the time, and the update process doesn't bog down the computer either.

I just switched from Avast! to MSE, So far I like it. Cleaner look. And I don't have to register!

And that lil spinning ball in the system tray was taunting me. It had to be destroyed.

I removed McAfee from a computer and installed MSE. HDD access went down significantly and doesn't hog up the system.

In the thread "major graphics problem" in the Desktop Computers, it was mentioned that Microsoft Security Essentials is a bad one. Can you please verify this for me? This is what I use.

Two months ago and independent German lab tested it and it only found about 60% of what the lab tossed at it. I'm still gonna use it myself.

Yeah if you've got Norton now, I would recommend you switch to something different. Avast is a good choice.

I'm using MSE and having no issues. Integrates well with Windows Firewall and never bogs down when it scans pretty much daily. I don't torrent or anything like that so I'm never really at much risk for viruses as I'm normally pretty careful. I used Avast too and liked it but it was a bit too flashy and obnoxious at times so I got something a little cleaner and low key.

Norton and McAfee really suck down resources and I don't advise them.

Yeah I agree with this. The notifications can be turned off, but they do pop-up a lot and yeah it can be a bit distracting.

MSE and Avast are my favourite free ones. I personally wouldn't bother with anything else. Pair either MSE or Avast with Malwarebytes and you're good to go.

I find Norton excellent, I have had it 3 years without problems and the backup is excelent.
I do not find it slows the system down anymore than others.

Is ZoneAlarm good these days?..i remember using that maybe 5 years ago. :D

Yea, it's pretty good as long as you keep it updated. I have it installed on my other laptop. Been using it for about 4 years without any problems. It is much better than McAfee & Norton paid versions for sure.
