Best free antivirus/spyware downloads

I was wondering what everyone here thinks is the best free antivirus, spyware/adware, pop-up blocker, and if there is such a thing, registry cleaner download. And that is the best FREE downloads.

Also, what are the best paid-for antivirus, spyware/adware, pop-up blocker, and if there is such a thing, registry cleaner?

I am asking about a registry cleaner because I keep getting pop-ups from "Messenger Service" that my registry is corrupted and that I need to immediately download www.registrycleanerxp.com. I also get a second one which tells me to download www.wreg32.com. I don't know if these are legitimate messages or maybe some kind of virus or adware.

The best anti virus that's free i've used so far and have been using for over a year now is avg.. if you go to download.com and search for avg 7.5 get the "free version" and try it out.. it updates every other day and I haven't had anything since..

As far as spyware goes I use spyware doctor and easycleaner.. both free and work great

I installed avg after you suggested here and uninstalled it. It didn't detect any infections even though I had infections. Not only that, but ever since I put it on my computer, my computer has been running extremely slow. Once I uninstalled it, my computer starting running ok again. Does anyone have any other opinions of what's the best free antivirus/spyware downloads?

I would suspect that you have other problems with your computer as AVG does not do what you say it does. I, like many others have been running this program for many years with no problems. I have installed it on all my client machines. I think you had better do a good on line virus scan, clean up all spyware before you continue. Also turn off system restore when you do this as virus etc are known to hide there.

AVG will slow down a slow computer.. My free recommendations would be Avira antivir, Spyware Terminator, and SUPERantispyware. They'll run perfectly next to each other. The best registry cleaner is CCleaner, a multifaceted app that combines a registry cleaner with a "crap" cleaner. Ccleaner is one of the "must haves" for any windows based PC.

AVG for your antivirus needs, and AD-aware for spyware/registry cleanups. Both have trial version downloads.

Avg has also missed infections my pc's have had in the past, then norton picked them up after I switched. theres some 60 and 30 day norton 360 trials kicking around as well. The 360 also scans for spyware.

I've never had those issues on any machine i've installed avg on and it's been well above 30 and in counting now.

AVG is only free if you have no infections at the time of downloading. If it finds infections you must register it and pay a fee. I love ad aware, it's found over 2000 items in about 6 months. The manual version is free but the realtime version has a moderate cost. I've noticed there are a lot of imitators for ad-aware, be careful in picking a download. ie. adware is not ad-aware.
